How To Overcome Depression And Live A Happier Life

Hey loves, welcome to today’s post and it’s all about depression. Here’s all you need to know about it.

Depression is becoming a rampant issue for the society as millions of people are getting diagnosed with it. Depression is a state of mind producing serious, long term lowering of enjoyment of life or inability to visualize a happy future. It is a period of unhappiness which may include the ideation of self infliction or suicide.

It is normal to be sad when things happen but when you can’t let go of that sadness and you’re filled with emotions like hopelessness and despair, you may be depressed. These days more and more people especially the teenagers and youths suffer from depression as they are overwhelmed with their emotions, struggles and setbacks.

Depression has a way of bringing you down affecting how you think, feel and interact with others. It can also affect your ability to eat, sleep, study, work and perform other activities.
You may be feeling lifeless, helpless and hopeless but don’t worry you can feel better. First, you have to recognize the different symptoms, what makes you feel the way you feel, what do you do when you are unnecessarily sad. Once you’ve gone over that we can then move on to the very reason why you are reading this.

HOW TO OVERCOME DEPRESSION

UNDERSTAND THE CAUSE OF YOUR DEPRESSION

This step is essential because you cannot fight something you don’t understand. Understand what thoughts take you to your ‘depressed mode’. If it’s because you don’t have friends, go out of your way to talk to someone, interact with others. If you are depressed about your job, get another. If you’re depressed about your academics find a way to improve it. Once you’ve made a move to bring yourself out of the situation that causes your depression, you get better. Take for instance, if the reason you are depressed is because of you poor grades in your academics, you would notice that once you start getting better grades you become less unhappy and you are slowly wiggling yourself out of depression.

PUSH OUT NEGATIVITY, EMBRACE POSITIVITY

Focus on your thoughts, don’t linger on things that make you unhappy. Don’t let your thoughts dictate your mood. Avoid overthinking. Get rid of the bad vibes and negative thoughts, embrace positivity. Think happy thoughts, awake happy memories. When you notice you’re getting sad replace the sad thoughts with something you like. Focus on the things that make you happy, do it often. Do not dwell on the ‘what ifs’ erase all the ‘ I can’t’ with ‘I can’. You can do anything, everything is possible as well as overcoming your depression.

AVOID ISOLATION, ENGAGE

I get most people like being on their in most times but if you are depressed, try as much as possible to avoid being alone. This is essential because when you are alone, your thoughts are free to swim about in your head and then you start thinking of the things you want but don’t have or anything putting you in your depressed state. When you notice you are falling into the depressed state, engage. Call a friend, watch a movie, read a book, listen to upbeat music. Just keep yourself busy so you can erase all negativity and do something productive.

SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP

Most people seldom do this because they feel they will be tagged as a ‘psychiatric’, don’t let that bother you. Your mental health is essential for healthy living. Consult a therapist who can help you treat your depression, someone you can talk to and motivate you. While anti-depressants can be recommended, it is not a long term cure as it sometimes comes with side effect and draw backs.

TURN TO GOD

feel there’s nothing a prayer can’t solve. Talk to God. If you notice that you’re overwhelmed with a sudden emotion, take it to him, present your worries to him, there’s nothing too small for him to do or too big for him to handle. He has you covered, all you have to do is seek him out.

Suicide is never an option. Remember, you want an end to the problem not your life.

I wished I read this two years ago. I always thought that staying on my own was going to help, but it was far from being the healthy choice. Thanks to therapy I discovered what was truly the root of it and changed it. I think there’s still a lot of stigma around it, but it’s great that people talk about it. thanks for sharing x

Depression is definitely something that needs to be addressed. It’s not the easiest subject to overcome either. Sometimes, it’s the feeling of hopelessness and feeling like you can’t do anything about it. There are resources out there to help. Therapy is definitely a great place to start, they are great with giving tools to cope and attempt to turn things around 🙂

Thanks for discussing a topic so prevalent yet still so under-discussed in today’s society. I agree that it’s important to allow yourself first to be sad and recognize that emotion. Then, it’s important to figure why it’s happening and work toward moving past it. Asking for support from friends and family is great and if needed, seeking professional help and beyond requires no shame. You show that you have to be brave and work hard to move past depression which is even more difficult when you are in the midst of it. I’m glad you’re helping people move toward their happier life!

Great tips! I agree with all of them! I would also add that it is beneficial to go out to nature and just enjoy. Feel the wind and the sun on your shoulders. Appreciate the beauty around you. And believe. It doesn’t have to be God. Just believe in yourself. Believe that everything will be OK again. If you believe in yourself then you will get through it. You will get through anything
