Year in Review: 10 Valuable Lessons I Learned In 2020

Hey loves, this year is about to come to an end and I decided to do a post on what 2020 has taught me. I believe we all learned a lesson or two from this year so my question is what did you learn?

This year is surely going to be unforgettable with all the events that happened, from covid-19 to EndSars , black lives matter and every other notable things that happened this year has felt like two years in one, we will surely have a lot to tell our kids and grandkids about this year. So let me tell you what I learned this year.

1. Self Love

One of the most important thing I’ve learned this year is to love myself. I’ve always felt like nobody loves me yada yada and when someone tells me they do I’ll just roll my eyes and scoff because I always wondered what the person loves about me because I really couldn’t see anything to love about myself.

This year I learned to love almost everything about myself, my weakness and my strengths and everything about me and it changed a lot of things for me. It changed how I view myself and how others view me. Along with loving myself I learned how to respect myself, take care of myself, show up for myself, forgive myself and just know that I am worthy of everything I desire and operate from a place of worth and value rather than insecurities, lack and worthlessness and this has made me hype myself rather than look and talk down on myself because that gave room for others to do the same but now there’s no room for that.

So in essence self love isn’t selfish, it is required. You owe it to you to love you not anyone else.

How To Love Yourself

2. Gratitude

I feel gratitude is a must. I’ve learned to be more grateful this year. A lot has happened this year and even if I didn’t get some things I wanted that doesn’t mean I should dismiss the other good things that happened. I am grateful for a lot of things this year and I’ll probably do a post on that soon. I’m just so grateful to be alive and that every member of my family is complete. I’m grateful for my friends and the amazing people I met/ discovered this year.

3. Things won’t always go as planned

Everyone had plans for how great 2020 will be for them and for some those plans were thrown out of the window. No one knew the world will be on lockdown, as crazy as it may seem I haven’t even heard the word quarantine before now. I know how almost everyone was saying I’ll do this in 2020, 2020 is going to be my year and four months into it we were speechless.

I had planned how by the end of this year I’ll have just two years remaining in University but guess what, I still have three years left and with the way it’s going in Nigeria only God knows when we’ll resume University, if it isn’t Corona it’s Asuu.

The point is that something will always come up that will ruin your plans so it’s always good to have a plan B, C or D.

4. Self Growth

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s the importance of self growth and just being intentional to grow as a person and just invest in myself. It’s really important to Invest in yourself in any way you can, be it physically, financially, morally, educationally and any other thing that comes to mind. Investing in yourself isn’t doing anyone a favour especially if you’re paying for a book or course. Investing in yourself is for your own good. People will pay you for investing in yourself, you’re not doing anyone else a favour but yourself.

The other day I was calculating how I spent my money this year and although it was nothing grand I did spend a lot on courses and books normal me that would have used it to buy clothes and this is not saying I didn’t get any clothes though. I guess I just realized how important it is to invest in myself all round instead of just my physical appearance alone.

Don’t be scared to pay for that course or buy that book, you can change your life gradually through them.

5. Mind my business

I learned to mind my business more this year and just know that not everything matters or demands my attention. I used to be the girl that knew what and what that celebrity or influencer was up to but nowadays I know little to nothing. I’ve just chosen to not bother myself about petty things also and just drink water and mind my business knowing it doesn’t concern me.

Nobody’s business is my business, minding other people’s businesses will not do me any good so it’s important for me to focus on me. (This is a good affirmation for that)

6. Enjoy the small things and celebrate them

This just followed with me being more grateful this year. I’ve learned to enjoy and appreciate the little things more and celebrate them in my own little way by rewarding myself after accomplishing a task. It’s not until you accomplish that big thing that you should clap for yourself. Celebrate the process, before you get to level ten celebrate all the levels leading to it.

7. Embrace a new way of thinking

So this year, I had a change of thinking from having a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and that really changed things. I had to learn, relearn and unlearn a lot of things that has helped reconstruct my mindset for the best. I’ve also learned not to talk down on myself but instead use positive affirmations and they just help me feel better about myself.

8. To see the good no matter how bad it is

Yeah no one really expected things to turn out this way but it did and even if it has been a bad incident it gave me time to focus on myself, heal from some things, focus on my growth, start this blog, read more, learn a thing or two and just appreciate life more.

9. It’s okay to not be okay

It’s okay to not be okay. Nobody really feels positive all the time no matter what they want you to think. Everyone has days when they feel like they should be transferred to another universe or the earth should just swallow them. It’s okay not to have it all figured out. It’s okay not to be okay with the situations going on around you. It’s okay for you to cry if needs be, it’s okay for you to feel like giving up.

Even if you give up, make sure you look up because if you can look up, you can get up.

10. Let Go And Breathe

It’s okay to slow down and not be in a haste. It’s okay to let go of any ship that is not favouring you. Stop carrying the weight of the world on your shoulder, let it go and breathe. Let go of toxic relationships and breathe. I’ve also learned to stop stressing too much especially over little things and just relax and breathe.

I’ve also learned to stop overthinking and just do and if I’m overthinking a past event to let it go and breathe because it’s not helping me in anyway.

Thanks for sticking with me and reading this post. I’ll love to hear from you, what are the things 2020 taught you and what did you discover about yourself this year?

Love this! I learned a lot of similar lessons this year but I also finally learnt that it’s okay to TAKE A BREAK! I needed a break so bad this year – and I’m glad I took my time to heal this year. I feel so much better now. πŸ™‚

Minding your own business is a lesson that a lot of people need to learn! I hope 2021 is even better for you. ❀

That’s lovely. Taking a break and taking time to focus on you and heal is amazing. ❀️

Yeah, we need to mind our business more and focus on ourselves rather than what the other person is up to.

Thanks. I hope 2021 is even better for you as well πŸ€—

Awesome points. This year shocked a whole lot of people, plans were changed abruptly and in the midst of the pandemic there was an awakening, and people protested on different issues all around the world. I really liked that.
Forgiving and respecting one’s self is also crucial.
On the side, I can remember that this year I also filtered the kind of information I was getting from Twitter influencers cos some of em fell my hand… LoL.
Cheers on a much better 2021 Nianni!

I learnt a lot this year and still learning…

…how to handle a business better
…how to do new kitchen tricks with food
…that not everyone in this world can be as honest as u see ur self
…that this life is more about the hustle
…also learnt the reason why youths don’t like working under people

I’m glad that you used this year to create a new mindset and priorities which I’m sure will be helpful once things get back to normal. I think my biggest life lesson this year was patience. I learned not to rush and to take my time and do things right so that I can be proud of my accomplishments instead of seeing the flaws that came from rushing through a project or task. So I hope I can hold onto that mindset as well as the pace picks up in 2021. Happy New Year!

That’s amazing. Being patient is still something I’m working on but I don’t think I’m there yet, sometimes I just want to get to my destination instantly or do that thing quickly and get done with it and get frustrated when it’s not going well. Any helpful tips?

Thanks for reading, wishing you all the best in year 2021 πŸŽ‰πŸ€—

These are some great lessons to come out of the craziness known as 2020. This is definitely going to be a year that will show up someday in the history books as people read about the year that COVID shut the world down lol! The biggest lesson that I’ve learned is that it’s okay to slow down and relax. I’m one of those people that is usually go, go, go. This year, with so many things cancelled, I was forced to take a step back and spend more time at home. What an eye opener! I realized that not only is that downtime relaxing, but it actually helps me to be more productive later when I AM getting to work on something.

It’s been a particularly painful year (aside from Covid-19, which was bad enough, my husband has been battling late-stage cancer the entire 12 months). It has been a huge test and it can be hard to find the positives sometimes — but, we’ve both learned how resilient we are and how much love we have that can get us through anything. I’m so grateful for that. Here’s to a better 2021 for everyone!

This is a really lovely post! I think many people are learning to go by what is going on around them, trust their guts, and not get too bent out of shape when things do not go as planned. Self-love is also so important; we have to look out for ourselves too!

This is a beautiful set of lessons. I think mostly I have learned this year that I am very capable and resilient. I’ve learned to express myself more, so that I can help others deal with things. I’ve also learned that we all die, and that it sucks.

Yeah, death seems scary. Those are really nice lessons you’ve learned this year. Being able to express yourself more and help others deal with things is really good.

Cheers to a better year in 2021 πŸŽ‰

This is such a beautiful post! I must say I agree and have definitely learned many of these things in which you have mentioned. The 2 most are gratitude and understanding that things do no go as planned in life.

So much has happened this year for me and it has changed my view, forced me to grow even more, and put so many things in perspective for me!

Thanks so much for sharing.

I am glad that you have started taking self-love seriously, and you are right on point, it’s not selfish at all. Respecting ourselves and accepting our strengths and shortcomings makes us a wonderful person in the end. I am sorry that it takes longer for you to finish University, but your positive approach towards each and everything that happened in your life this year is incredible. Wish you all the best next year!

Wow, this is awesome! It’s inspirational!! You are so right about all of it. Self love really is required – and how wonderful that you conquered that mountain this year. It’s a hard one. And words – what we tell ourselves, is so powerful, so positive affirmations, in your own words, can really help. Love what you say about celebrating and enjoying the small things, too!
